What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium post that is placed into the jawbone where a tooth used to be. Over time, the post bonds with the bone and creates a stable foundation for a replacement tooth. The result looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth.

Unlike removable dentures, implants do not slip or require adhesive. Also, unlike a traditional dental bridge, implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support.

Implants can support a crown, bridge, or denture so it can stay in place comfortably. They offer a long-term solution that can last decades with the right care.

Why Patients from Palo Alto Choose Dr. Schweifler

Dr. Schweifler is a third-generation dentist with deep roots in the Los Altos community. His father and grandfather both practiced dentistry, and that family legacy has shaped the way he approaches patient care. He believes in taking the time to truly understand each patient’s situation before recommending any treatment.

He has pursued advanced training in implant dentistry through some of the most respected programs available, including the KOIS Center and the Schuster Center for Professional Development. These are rigorous, evidence-based programs that go well beyond what is required to maintain a dental license. Dr. Schweifler is committed to continued education so you receive care that reflects the latest clinical standards.

Palo Alto patients often visit us because they want something different from the rushed, high-volume experience they have encountered elsewhere. Dr. Schweifler intentionally operates as an independent private practice. He never rushes your care and will create a custom treatment plan built around you.

Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Most healthy adults are good candidates for dental implants. During your consultation, Dr. Schweifler will review your medical history, examine your teeth and gums, and evaluate your bone density. Good candidates typically:

  • Have one or more missing teeth
  • Have healthy gum tissue
  • Have sufficient jawbone to support an implant
  • Are not heavy smokers
  • Do not have uncontrolled diabetes or other conditions that affect healing

If bone loss is a concern, Dr. Schweifler may recommend a bone graft before implant placement. He can also provide tooth extractions or gum disease treatment, so you’re ready for treatment. Dr. Schweifler will walk you through every step and make sure you have a clear picture of what to expect.

The Implant Process: What to Expect

Getting dental implants is a step-by-step process that usually takes several months to complete. While Dr. Schweifler doesn’t place the implants himself, he works closely with trusted oral surgeons in the area who perform the surgical placement. Dr. Schweifler handles the planning, restoration, and final restoration to give you a complete bite.

Initial Consultation and Planning

First, Dr. Schweifler will carefully evaluate your mouth and take detailed images, such as X-rays or 3D scans. He’ll review your jawbone health and overall oral health to create a personalized treatment plan. During this visit, he’ll explain each step of the process and answer all your questions so you know exactly what to expect.

Implant Placement

Dr. Schweifler will refer you to a skilled oral surgeon who specializes in placing dental implants. During this appointment, the surgeon will place a small titanium post into your jawbone. This is done through a minor surgical procedure, and you’ll receive local anesthesia to keep you completely comfortable.

Healing Period

Over the next few months, something amazing happens inside your jaw. The titanium implant begins to bond with the surrounding bone in a natural process called osseointegration. This creates a strong, permanent foundation for your new tooth—just like a natural root. During this healing time, Dr. Schweifler will check in with you to make sure everything is progressing well.

Final Restoration

Once the implant has fully integrated with your bone, you’ll return to Dr. Schweifler’s office for the final step. If you have a single implant, he’ll attach a custom-made crown. If you have several missing teeth, you can get a dental bridge or denture.

This crown is carefully designed and color-matched to blend perfectly with your natural teeth. No one can tell the difference between your implant and your real teeth.
